README FILE FOR SENDMAIL+IDA FOR LINUX
**************************************
This is sendmail 5.67b+IDA for Linux.
======================================
There are two binaries, one that 'requires bind' and one that 'does not use
bind (and therefore won't read MX records)'. Pick the right one and set the
link in /usr/lib accordingly.
There are m4-related docs in /usr/local/lib/mail.
Be certain to extract this with 'cd / ; tar zxvopf filename.tgz' to ensure
that all the permissions and setuid/setgid bits are set properly.
This is essentially the same kit that has been uploaded to sunsite.unc.edu a
number of times, except I've removed the now-obsolete mailx-5.3b from the
distribution. Grab the mailx-5.5 from slackware instead.
Linux doesn't come by default with a local mail delivery agent. I recommend
you use 'deliver' to do local delivery. Grab that kit from Slackware also and
save yourself the effort. Be certain to ensure that the built-in default for
deliver has a path that matches what Slackware installs to. You might want to
fake it with a link to be certain. (ln -s /usr/bin/deliver /bin/deliver).
Standard disclaimer:
====================
I know of no bugs in any of the items herein that are different than the bugs
you see running these programs under other variants of Unix. In other words,
this should be bug-compatible with what you're familiar with if you run these
programs on other platforms and operating systems. Any patches were done to
simply get 'em to compile under Linux.
However, I accept absolutely no responsibility for any potential effects or
costs associated with this software acting unexpectedly or adversely on your
system. Use of the included programs or config files is entirely at your own
risk.
In case of problems:
====================
It's entirely possible that I forgot to include or mention something that's
required for a binary distribution like this to work. If so, please
(politely) let me know and I'll see what I can do.
I will NOT (!) answer questions that indicate to me that you haven't attempted
to read the documentation and/or man pages. If you get a response that says
'read the stinking man page', that's exactly what I mean. If it's obvious
that you tried to read it, but didn't understand something, I'll try to reply
eventually within the constraints of my limited time, but please realize that
I'm busy too.
Lastly, don't even bother trying to flame me for some perceived problems in
this or any other software...I don't need the blood pressure and any such
messages will be simply deleted immediately without any response.
So where are the sources:
=========================
For sendmail+IDA, grab it from uxc.cso.uiuc.edu
For config files for most uucp/news/mail programs, grab a copy of my
'NEWSPAK' (current version 2.4) from pub/System/Mail on sunsite.unc.edu

Changes
=======
02/07/95 - removed mailx5.3b since Slackware's is more recent
also removed 'lmail' since Slackware's "deliver" is better
03/24/94 - fixed bad address for where to get the sources via ftp
- put Linux binary for 'dbm' in rather than the ELF binary for 'dbm'
(oops...how'd THAT get in there ?)
03/13/94 - original binary distribution uploaded to sunsite.unc.edu
